So, true story, I was too busy to write a proper review of A Town Called Mercy. (I had some things to do. Things are important!) But obviously not too busy to spent a million years on Tumblr drooling over gifs! So in lieu of an actual it-would-take-time-to-write review, with consent from all parties I'm going to share with you this conversation I had with my friend Amelia Pond.
This has been mildly edited to correct for us talking over each other, and to insert relevant gifs/links. As ever, spoilers behind the cut.
lo! we watched town called mercy, btw! and i checked your bloggy and found no review yet, lol, so let me knowww when i can go stalk it
we were disappointed in the ep
meh, yeah.. it was odd. plot seemed weak and rushed, with just a lot of focus on MORAL DILEMMA
where bad dude dies anyway
and if they'd just let him die in the first place
innocent dude wouldn't have died
THANKS DOCTOR, YOU BEING AN ASSHOLE KILLED CRICHTON, YOU BASTARD
Seriously, guest-starring in Doctor Who is starting to look worse than being a redshirt.
Angry Doctor is scary
like, way more scary than the gunslinger imho
yeah, Doctor pointing a gun at someone is weird!
when he was screaming at dude / kicking him out of town, I was actually scared
Matt Smith's a good actor
I guess this episode just fell out of the believability range for me
Like the first ep with Amy & Rory being ready to just give up their relationship after.... ALL THAT
After ALL THIS you kick him out of your shared home together?
STRAIGHTEN YOUR SHIT OUT.
yeah, that was a very weak plotline
did not like Asylum that much
this was like that for me with the doctor's personality, as well as jax's turn-on-a-dime moodshift from NO I CAN'T DIE to killing himself
all timed perfectly so that an innocent could die accidentally
I think the angry-Doctor is moar evidence that he's already seen Amy/Rory die
I'm pretty hung up on this idea, you guys.
because he got all rageful right after Jex guy was basically poking him for not having the guts to make the hard choices to save people
which at first I was like, yeah don't make fun of the Doctor for failing to save his own species OF WHICH HE IS THE LAST
yeah, I would think that thing right there would be enough to make him rageful
but then I was like WAIT if he'd just seen Amy and Rory die, then YEAH
but lots of things have made him rageful.... and he's never no matter what the cause resorted to guns
it was like.. weird for me
he's also 1200 in this one
and at the end of last season he was what 1100?
i was reading some other reviews, and that was the first i picked up on that lol
and I still think he's been traveling with River for most of that
I think she's fucking him up
yeah.. I dunno. I get that you can put in what you think is backstory and that makes it make sense... but I want the writers to make it make sense. lol.
Not everyone is as easily bought off with meaningful glances as I am.
lol yes exactly
either way it's rolling, THE WRITERS BETTER HAVE REASONS
and THOSE REASONS BETTER COME OUT LATER ON
because, yeah, the past three whole episodes have been filled with wtf-ery moments
yeah in general the past couple episodes seem sort of ... rushed? i guess, to me
the eps need to be longer, or there need to be more of them
like, big story, squeeze it and don't do it justice to get it one episode and throw in tangential drama
and then act like everyone learned a moral lesson
or they need to throw in less tangential bullshit for drama
haha that would also work
Doctor, not twelve hours ago you singlehandedly threw this guy out of town yourself.
Maybe we could explore that a little before we...
Nope, back to the Western thing, which is very interesting, I know.
idk if that's a real-world side effect of Moffat (main writer) doing Sherlock as well
Sherlock is like, 3 eps/season, 90 minutes/ep
yeah that's an interesting thought
I've never seen sherlock.. but have been thinkin
though I would say that
you would haha
I'm kind of obsessed
The Doctor is basically alien Sherlock Holmes
I do not like this season's style of big flashy movie-style episodes
fuck all the lens flare, give me good character development
the scenes are beautiful
but like.. plot-focus plz?
let's see Amy and Rory's relationship!
one of the reviews i read was gushing about mercy's shooting location in spain
and how it was beautiful and they packed all kinda shots of it in there
and i'm like yeah great, they did that instead of making a good episode lol
and when Marshall Whatsisface died I pretty much rolled my eyes instead of feeling sad
Yeah, whatever, you've known him what? Fifteen minutes?
yeah I was pissed at that part
like OF COURSE
not like, DAMN HE DIED
but like you fucks, really?!
and then the fucking marshall badge
I did like that little bit where the Doctor was talking down the mob via the 18-yr-old
yeah that was coo
esp because it was like "yeah, I suck, but you're still okay"
it brought back all the feels from the whole "who haven't I screwed up yet" thing from last season
I thought it was handled weirdly that they had the 18-yr-old leading the mob
like as soon as the doc convinced him, everyone wandered offbut the overall feeling of the scene was niiice
yeah, idk, that's apparently some Western standard thing?
the kid trying to prove himself in front of the town
I don't know enough about it, but tumblr people who do seemed to like it
I love how we both have apparently dived into the reviews online
Starting with this one.
I'm excited for next week's, because after that is Amy and Rory's last ep
can't handle it
yeah I'm confused about that
I thought Amy & Rory were only in 4 eps this season
but this was they didn't die yet
and i'm like wut?
and next episode isn't the angels ep either?
though I'm thinking it leads up to it somehow?
ok so we have the ponds for the next 2 episodes?
and then GONE FOREVER
I all told Rory they were only in 4 this season, cuz somehow i got that idea, and he was alll like.. why they still alive?
unless Moffat lies, which he does
i'm interested to see how they bring souffle making companion back
or if that episode is how she ends up
and somehow just didn't remember the doc
time stream this & that
timeywimey as FUCK
yeah me too
but I mostly want to see the Doctor sorted out
because he is NOT HIMSELF
and it makes me cranky
in my pants area
actually, so I've been busy as hell lately
and haven't written a blag about this yet
is it OK if I use this convo (names removed! obvi) as a post?
can link your source to whatever you'd like / give you a funny pseudonym / leave you anonymous as desired
but this basically I think is a good review
go fo it!
